England manager Gareth Southgate has given an update on Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell who picked up an injury in the last game against Belgium. The Blues left-back was subbed off in the first half of the UEFA Nations League clash after picking up a back injury. He was replaced by Arsenal player Bukayo Saka after 38 minutes.
Southgate talked about Chilwell in his pre-match press conference ahead of the UEFA Nations League meeting with Iceland at home. According to him, the Chelsea defender continues to receive treatment on the back problem as he failed toreveal the extent of the injury. Chilwell is facing a spell on the sidelines as a result of the back injury though it must be pointed out that the exact time is unknown.
Chilwell will certainly miss the Iceland game on Wednesday night in the UEFA Nations League and he’s also expected tomiss out on the return to Premier League football at the end of the international break this month. The English fullback will likely miss the visit of Chelsea at Newcastle United.
The full-backhas been in scintillating form for the Blues this term following his £50m transfer from fellow Premier League team Leicester City.He has scored two goals and provided two assists in five Premier League matches for the Blues this term. The left-back position was a problematic one for Chelsea manager Frank Lampard until the arrival of Chilwell at the start of the season.
In his absence for the league trip to face the Magpies in the early kick-off on Saturday, Lampard might be forced to turn to the likes of Marcos Alonso or Emerson Palmieri to prosecute the game. Chelsea are three points off the Premier League summit and a win in the first game of the weekend would take the Blues to the top until the other teams are in action.
