Sunglasses brands have engaged the services of famous athletes for many years now, with Oakley often at the forefront of these agreements. From Patrick Mahomes to Josef Newgarden, Kylian Mbappe to Rory Mcllroy, Oakley has a proven track record of hooking up with winners and trendsetters. They’ve continued this theme in their recent agreement with one of the most famous names in the world.
Rodman was a name synonymous with basketball. Dennis Rodman is a five-time NBA champion and two-time NBA All-star. He also helped drive the Oakley brand, appearing courtside and on film sporting frames like the custom Zero 0.3 and Trenchcoat. Now, his daughter Trinity has signed up to be an Oakley sunglasses ambassador, but she isn’t one to shoot hoops – Trinity is a top soccer prospect in the United States.
Who Is Trinity Rodman?
21-year-old Rodman doesn’t just have a ball at her feet – she also has the world at her feet. Women’s soccer enjoys its greatest success in the United States, and Rodman is one of the stars of the future. At 18 was the youngest player to be drafted in NWSL history by Washington Spirit, and in 2021 she won NWSL Rookie of the Year, NWSL Best XI, and Young Female Player of the Year honors. She’s played 17 times for the USWNT, scoring two goals, and was recently called up to the squad for the 2023 World Cup.
She’s also fast becoming an icon not just for US women’s soccer but globally. She has endorsement deals with Adidas and Red Bull, she’s the author of a children’s book, and has starred in a television advert for communications giant Verizon.
Who Are Oakley?
Oakley is one of the most recognizable sunglasses brands in the world, not least because of Dennis Rodman’s influence in the early and mid-nineties. Started by Jim Jannard in 1975, they were initially aimed at motocross events, where he marketed them as having a special grip, dubbed ‘The Oakley Grip.’ Since then, they’ve become intrinsically linked with sports, thanks to their designs and use of ambassadors to drive their brand. They currently offer a range of sports-friendly frames, such as the Batwolf and Castel series loved by athletes in many different fields.
Their glasses are designed to be sturdy, and many designs have nose grips so they remain on your face whilst cycling, running, rowing or any other sports. Their Prizm range comes with polarized lenses, designed to stop the glare from reflective surfaces, and many of their sunglasses frames are compatible with prescriptions to help athletes with weaker eyesight perform to the best of their ability and look good in the process. Their Overhead Crankshaft and Valve ranges are available with high prescriptions, making Oakley a flexible choice for athletes who even suffer from significantly reduced vision.
What’s The Agreement?
Rodman has signed at the same time as another exciting new star, Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero. Like Rodman, he is a rising star, aged just 20, and the most recent NBA Rookie of the Year. The pair will be a part of the lifestyle campaign dubbed ‘More Than Meets The Eye’ from Oakley. They’re not alone in the campaign – soccer star Kylian Mbappe is a major name behind the sunglasses brand, as well as Damian Lillard and another women’s soccer player, FC Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas.
If Trinity is half as successful at pushing the brand’s appeal as Dad Dennis was, this could be the start of a winning combination that further cements Oakley as the leading global sports eyewear brand.
